Midland County Hospital District Police Department

Midland County Hospital District Police Department

Founded in 2015 and located at Midland Memorial Hospital, the MCHD Police Department has a blend of Peace Officers, Security Officers, and Telecommunicators, all licensed through the State of Texas. Each member of the MCHD PD receives specialized mental health training through the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement in crisis intervention, de-escalation, peer support, intellectual and developmental disabilities, and suicide prevention. Working closely with medical and mental health professionals, officers with the MCHD PD are included as necessary stakeholders in providing emergency assistance.

While maintaining a 24/7 police presence at the hospital, officers also patrol Midland Health satellite campuses and clinics. Whether communicating with people in person or by phone, MCHD PD personnel treat all people with kindness and respect. Strengthening communication capabilities for people with neurodevelopmental conditions, the MCHD PD sought additional training and certification through the International Board of Credentialing and Continuing Education Standards. As a result, the MCHD Police Department became the second law enforcement agency in Texas to become a Certified Autism Center™. This achievement enhances our capabilities as public servants and aligns with the healing mission core value of Midland Health by doing our best to improve the overall mental health and well-being of our community.

The credential achieved equips our staff to have awareness and more effective de-escalation strategies involving persons with autism, which can minimize misunderstandings, anxiety, and even a reduction in use-of-force encounters.
